Florist in a pickle

Slowing down flowering

There are times during the seasons when it may be advantageous for a
florist to ‘hold’ the development of a flower, perhaps to even out a
glut of flowers, or before a peak sales period. Tulips, gladioli and
peonies are especially suited to the following method.

It is essential to use flowers that are in good condition, showing no
signs of mould or fungal diseases, so a thorough inspection is
recommended. If the cut flowers are flaccid, they will need a drink to
regain firmness before storage. Excess foliage is removed and bunches
can be re-wrapped in paper. Shake off surplus water. Cellophane should
not be used, as it can induce moulds. Once wrapped bunches are
carefully packed into boxes.

Placed in the cold store, or in a cold dark cellar, the flowers can be
kept for five to seven days, and conditioned in the normal way when
required prior to the flower
delivery Wesburn.

Mounting Flowers

This is the method of attaching a wire to the base of the
stem or stems of foliage or a support-wired flower, usually to give
anchorage or additional support. The gauge of mount wire, which is
generally heavier than that of the support wire, depends on the weight
of the materials and their end use; for example, a piece of Asparagus
setaceus to be used in a corsage would be mounted on a fine wire.
Foliage for a wreath edging would require a heavier wire.

Single leg mount

This gives extra security, as a single wire can pushed right through a
foam or moss base and then returned back into the base. Use this
technique to secure focal-point flowers in funeral tributes and wedding
bouquets and posies in foam holders (when a glue gun is not being
used). For the single leg mount, one end of the wire (the left- hand
side if you are right handed), should be considerably longer than the
other, which is twisted around the stem. All of this work can, of course
be done well before the time of the flower delivery
Ashburton.

Double leg mount

This can be used to anchor foliage into the base of a funeral wreath. It
is formed in the same way as the above, except that the left- hand end
of wire is just a little longer than the right-hand one, so that both
finish equal in length, making a two-pronged mount. Both single and
double leg mounts (when complete) form a wire loop at the back, giving
extra support.

A New Dawn

For reasons that are obvious, today's lilies can be enjoyed by
everyone who can grow the average range of perennials. They are being
grown so successfully that lily bulbs in variety are being sold not
only by specialists, but are given generous space in most catalogs (even
those of the big mail-order houses) and are distributed by garden
centers, where in most cases you can have the flowers
delivered Castle Bromwich. Local lily societies are being organized
the country over, and many of these hold regional lily shows. To the
average homeowner the garden gate to the lovely world of lilydom is
just beginning to open. To him and to her there is available a wealth
of material in colors and flower forms scarcely dreamed of a few
decades ago. Available in vigorous, healthy, strong-growing bulbs
lilies are as sure to grow and give as much satisfaction as the other
hardy plants he purchases. In fact, they require much less attention
than many other garden favorites for they do not need constant spraying
and special winter protection.

Purchasing Tips

Check the water

Any flower you buy at any retail outlet should be in water. Check the
cleanliness of the water and the container. Is the water clear? Is the
container clean? If not don't buy the flowers. The only exception to
this would be tulips in muddy water - this does not kill these flowers.
In every other case, dirty water and dirty containers will reduce the
flowers' life.

Check the leaves

In many types of cut flowers the leaves start to die before the flower.
Check the leaves for signs of yellowing or blotching - if you see
these signs don't buy. This is especially useful when buying lilies or
chrysanthemums. If you are buying roses, don't buy bunches with dried
leaves.

Check the flowers

Last, have a good look at the flowers and buds. Many flower buds,
like roses or lilies open well in the vase (with proper care) so choose
the bunch with the fewest open flowers. Other flowers, like gerbera,
need to be bought fully open. Check to find out if the flower
delivery Miles Platting you want to order opens in the vase or not.

Lunaria
annua (money plant, Pope's money, honesty)

Characteristics: The money plant is an old-fashioned garden
plant grown for its showy seedpods. It is best grown in an informal
setting or meadow. The small clusters of flowers are violet or white in
color. A standard of Victorian European parlors, this lovely plant was
not grown in America until the 1930s. It produces circular seedpods
that dry into translucent silvery discs. These pods are extremely
decorative and useful in dried arrangements.

Cultural Information: The money plant is easily grown from
direct sown seed. In early summer, biennial plants need to be seeded
where they will flower the following summer.

Harvesting/Drying: This plant needs very little drying
time. Pick the silvery white seedpods when dry and papery. Remove the
outer brownish discs (the outer seed cover) by gently rubbing. A lovely
silvery disc will be uncovered. Air-dry in an upright or hanging
position until stems are dry. If you choose to have these flowers
delivered Arts District, handle gently as they tend to become very
brittle.

Recession

This is the placement of flowers, foliage and perhaps ribbon
bows on lower levels within design. To achieve recession, set
back short-stemmed flowers, foliage or ribbons by placing them behind
other materials. A design that lacks recession will appear hat and
two-dimensional, whereas materials placed on lower levels attract and
lead the eye into the design, creating visual balance. Short-stemmed
materials also have the advantage of hiding the mechanics, giving he
design an attractive finish while strengthening the profile. Check your
next flower
delivery Park District meets these criteria before sending to the
recipient.

Achieving recession

Use open flowers (avoid buds) and bold foliage, which will fill in
the design quickly. Use darker colours — their recessive quality will give greater
visual depth. Remember to leave space around the materials, otherwise the design
will appear packed and visually bottom-heavy.

An Open Wreath

The wreath represents the circle of life, and it was the
Greeks and Romans who first used this symbol at funerals. Every rich
Greek household employed a wreath maker to create the garlands,
chaplets and wreaths that were used for decorations and awards as well
as at funerals. The open wreath is a popular design, with the public
and florists alike. The variety of flower forms, textures and colour
combinations ensure that this is an interesting and challenging design
to make, and seasonal flowers can make it relatively inexpensive. This
is important for many people as the cost of the flower
delivery Great Crosby alone can be quite daunting.

Carnations are widely chosen as the main or focal flowers for the
wreath. They are spaced regularly around the wreath, and interspersed
with microgerberas. The spiky petals and daisy centre of the latter
provide a contrast in form to the carnations. The gerberas were
inserted in between the carnations, at a slightly lower level.
Alstroemerias, which contrast in form with both the carnations and the
gerberas, were placed in the inner circle and the outer circle, at
different levels.

The Queen of Flowers

Sooner or later, everyone who has a garden thinks about growing
roses.  There are practical reasons, if a gardener needs them, for
deciding to do just that.  For one thing, roses outperform practically
every other kind of garden plant in the number of flowers they produce,
in the length of their blooming season and in their normal life
expectancy.  But most gardeners become rose growers simply because they
fall in love with the flowers
Fairwater.  Roses have an irresistible combination of elegance and
charm, thorny strength and satin-petaled delicacy, and their blooms
come forth in a wonderful variety of colors, sizes, shapes and
fragrances.  It is this, the sensuous appeal of roses, which has made
them the world’s best-known and most popular ornamental plant.

Instant Oasis

Some flowers are easy to combine informally in a bouquet by simply
placing them in a container and arranging them loosely, one by one,
until you get the effect you want. In other cases, you may desire a
more formal arrangement and need to use devices you can purchase from a East
Williamsburg flower shop: Instant Oasis, a block of light, porous
material, which is reusable; a pinholder (needlepoint holder); and
floral clay or tape. Oasis is invaluable in arrangements because it
holds the stems wherever you want them. Never let one flower depend on
another to hold it upright. It won't work for long. Cut the Oasis
slightly smaller than the container and push it onto a needlepoint
holder that you've covered with a small piece of nylon panty hose. (The
nylon makes it easier to cleanly remove the Oasis.) If the holder
doesn't stay in place, fasten it to the bottom of the container with
floral tape or clay. Soak the Oasis in lukewarm water for a minute or
two before you set any flowers in it. The container you choose should
be clean so the flowers will stay fresh, and the flowers should relate
well to it. Neutral-colored containers show off blooms to best
advantage, but use your imagination to create unusual combinations. Hide
plain jars and cans in baskets, an antique kettle, or other
receptacle, for example.
