THINGS TO DO FOR HALLOWEEN

What you need: Elastic string; Scissors; aluminum foil (heavy duty); Wallpaper paste; Old newspapers; Variety of poster paints; Paint brush 2-4" or larger.

What to do:

1. Take a large piece of foil ( approx. 50") and fold in half.

2. Place the foil over the face of the person who will be wearing the mask (or yourself) and shape it into facial features by pressing it gently over the entire face, into grooves, under chin, and around to just in front of ears.

3. Carefully remove the mask and gently set it aside.

4. Cut or tear newspapers into 2" wide strips in vertically or horizontally. You can shorten this process by cutting through several sheets at one time.

5. Completely cover both sides of the newspaper strips with generously brushed on paste.

6. Gently cover the foil mask with wet strips of newspaper making certain that they overlap for sturdiness.

7. Repeat step 6 by placing the strips in the opposite direction of the first application of pasted strips. Set the mask aside and allow to dry completely, which usually takes about a week.

8.  When mask is completely dry, remove the foil and trim edges of mask with scissors.

9. Carefully cut out spaces for the eyes and mouth. Note: These spaces may be cut in any shape you like. Mean, happy, etc. Poke holes in the nostrils of the nose.

10. Paint your mask colors desired.

11. You may now embellish your mask with furry eyebrows, a wart on the nose, whatever you like. Punch a small hole on both sides of the mask just above ear level and string.

Halloween Punch

Serve your Halloween punch or spiced apple cider from a large hollowed-out pumpkin. Use a large ladle to serve in orange cups.

Serve fresh veggies using a hollowed out pumpkin as a bowl. Cut of the top and clean out, leaving the top in a jagged edge design! Use mini pumpkins to hold dips!

Use clear food handlers plastic gloves to freeze ice hands to throw in the punch bowl. It will keep it cold and look great!

                                      Caramel Covered Apples

CARMEL COVERED APPLES

INGREDIENTS
MAKES 5 CARAMEL APPLES

40 - Caramel cubes (I prefer the Borden Brand)

5 - Apples (I like Macintosh apples)

1 - Tablespoon of water

5 - Wooden sticks

1 - Wax paper

PREPARATION

Wash and dry the apples thoroughly. Remove stems and Insert the wooden sticks into the stem hole until about half the stick is in the apple. In a small saucepan, over low heat, melt the caramels with the water, stirring constantly until smooth. Now dip the apples into the hot caramel sauce, coating the apple completely. Place on greased, wax paper.

Store your caramel covered apples in the refrigerator.

Before serving, remove them from the refrigerator and allow them to stand for about fifteen minutes. We like to serve our caramel covered apples on a large black platter and use extra caramels as a garnish.

                                          Popcorn Balls

Popcorn balls may not seem like a dessert to you, but when you realize just how sweet and delicious they are you will soon have a new favorite dessert. This is another one of those recipes where any child would enjoy helping in the kitchen.

For the basic popcorn ball recipe you will need 10 cups of popped popcorn, 1 ½ cups of sugar, ½ cup of water, ¾ cup of molasses, a pinch of salt, and 3 tablespoons of margarine. In a medium saucepan, mix together the sugar, water, and molasses. Heat and stir until the mixture begins to boil. Then allow cooking until it reaches the hard ball stage. This is when a drop of the mixture forms a hard ball when dropped into a bowl of cold water. Remove from heat and add the margarine. Pour over popcorn and mix until well blended, form into balls.

If you like popcorn balls and caramel, then you are sure to love caramel popcorn balls which are prepared in the same way as above with basically the same ingredients. You will need ½ cup of margarine, ½ cup of corn syrup, 1 cup of brown sugar, 1 teaspoon of vanilla and 10 cups of popped popcorn. In a medium saucepan, mix together the margarine, corn syrup, brown sugar and vanilla. Bring to a boil and continuing cooking until the mixture reaches the hard ball stage. Pour the mixture over the popcorn and then form into balls.

For other variations, you can also add cocoa or chocolate chips to the margarine mixture to give your guests a new and unique flavor for their popcorn balls, chocolate. Who would not enjoy chocolate popcorn balls? You can also use other extracts instead of vanilla to give your popcorn balls their own unique flavor try banana, or almond. Give your trick or treat something to rave about with your own Halloween recipe for popcorn balls.

                                           Safety Tips

Make sure you feed your spooks before trick or treating, this helps them stay full and not want candy before you get them home to inspect the contents of their halloween bags.  Make sure you travel with them in groups, petting no animals and going to only houses you know.  Most counties now have an organized place and designated night to have Halloween for the children and I agree this is best.  It's a shame we can't "roam" like we did when I was a child.  Stay safe and blessed and enjoy your Halloween
