REPRINTED Actors, films vie for Oscars

The 83rd Academy Awards are on Sunday, and with films ranging from “Black Swan” and “The Fighter” to “Toy Story 3” and “The Social Network,” the Best Picture nominees cover all tastes.

For those unfamiliar with the Oscar world and the nominations this year, here’s a quick guide to the movies and actors in the spotlight.

Probably one of the most recognizable films nominated for Best Picture this year is “Black Swan,” the story of a young ballerina dealing with inner turmoil as she strives for the duel lead of the White and Black Swan in “Swan Lake.”

Natalie Portman plays the role of unstable dancer Nina Sayers, and she is nominated for Best Actress in a Leading Role.

“Black Swan is a film that really caught my attention,” Melissa Weekes (senior-biobehavioral health) said.

“The Fighter” — the boxing film about “Irish” Mickey Ward — is also up for numerous awards. Christian Bale is nominated for Best Actor in a Supporting Role and both Amy Adams and Melissa Leo are nominated for Best Actress in a Supporting Role.

David Fincher’s film about Mark Zuckerberg and the rise of Facebook is nominated for numerous Oscars including Best Film Editing, Best Original Score and Best Director. Jesse Eisenberg is up for Best Actor in a Leading Role.

“Inception” may seem like it was released ages ago, but it’s certainly not forgotten by the Academy. Christopher Nolan’s film of dream thieves is nominated for eight awards.

“I saw ‘Inception’ months ago, but it’s just one of those movies that sticks with you,” Erin Runnels (junior-public relations) said.

“The King’s Speech” is up for the most awards of any film. Starring Colin Firth, Geoffrey Rush and Helena Bonham Carter, the film tells the story of King George VI of Britain and his attempts to overcome his stutter
