This is the first book I read of
Rachel Gibson’s Chinook Hockey Team Series. Well this one is actually not the
first title of the series (it’s the third), but I found out that there had been
series after I read the second title, ‘See Jane Score’. That book made me
wonder whether Rachel is a big hockey fanatic, so I did a little browse and
found out that though there are several titles in the series, but they are not
directly connected to one another. There were repeated names in the next books
but it doesn’t affect the story so it’s okay not to read them based on orders.
So the story started at one
Valentine’s Night in a bar, where a miserable ex-Private Investigator, Kate
Hamilton was proposing an ex-hockey player, Rob Sutter into checking the tattoo
of her butt (you know where this actually leads to ). The proposal was later
turned down by Rob, saying he didn’t pick a girl from bars. The next few days
after the incident, Stanley, Kate’s grandfather, introduced her to Rob when he
was shopping at their supermarket, the M&S. To be polite, Rob pretended as
he never saw her before.
There was a rumor in the town
which tells Rob is a gay, and accidentally as it was wrongly taken by the
people of Gospel, the source of the bad gossip happened to be Kate. Of course
this made them like each other less, but after series of event which proved
that Rob isn’t gay or suffering from erectile dysfunction, fondness grew between
them. Especially, the event which took place one night at M&S, after Kate
baking cupcakes. If you see the grin you must know what I mean, or else if
you don’t, just purchase and read the book!
The main characters in the book
are actually equal at some points, none of them are the ‘good person’ type or
should I say ‘equally sinner’? Well that’s probably too much, but the point is they
both know what they want and just go with the flow even though they found
several obstacles, such as Rob’s ex-wife and the fact that he had a daughter
from the previous wedding. The obstacle somehow brought a kind of trauma to
Rob, that he never thought about marrying someone again. If he’d ever get
married, it must be to someone who’s worth to die for. The additional
characters such as Stanley and Grace, Rob’s mother also added some colors to
the story. Their typical relationship of true love which ended in a wedding
brings contrast to the relationship of Kate and Rob.
As Rachel Gibson is a ‘sucker’ to
happy-endings (I love the expression), this one is ended happily as well.
