Scene of the Great South Run October 26th, 2008 was Southsea Common. Cold and damp, 19,000 runners freezing their socks off waiting for the start. Paula Radcliffe was running (and winning of course in about 50 minutes!!), so spectator attendance was very high.
Atmosphere not dulled by the weather. Steel band, bagpipe band, jazz band all performing for us around the 10 mile course. I managed the 10 miles in 1 hour 32mins 5355th out of 19,000. Quite pleased. Now, if only I'd have had that bowl of porridge ah ,if only!!
The only downside was about a mile and half walk to and from the train station. Not too bad dry and under an umbrella, but not much fun on the return journey, wet cold and miserable. But I did have a medal! Accompanied of course by my lovely wife Julie, she brightened the overcast day.
Couple of more 10k's then a flat half marathon somewhere.
