‘There Go Horse and Beaver’
Prophecy of a 21st Century Mountain Man
There is a storm brewing in the rancid meat bag of modern society. In their
competition for economic advantage, governments, industry, and peoples are bit-by-bit digging up the hatchet in their
endless quest to raise one another’s resources. Resources all of which ultimately become little more than analogical Indian
Annuities derived from the sweat of an unsuspecting square shooter, given to spoiled
flatlanders, and squandered at the ultimate expense of Mother Nature.
There go horse and beaver.
As he 'cuts for sign' on the landscape of modern society, the 21st Century Mountain Man senses the approach of the
impending dark squall just as he feels, in his bones, the approach of a Blackbird Storm in the late spring.
And, no stranger to storms, he has his own personal storm brewing behind
his squinted, razor-sharp eyes and weathered brow - the storm of lost
respect
and lost identity.
From governments, he wonders, where is the respect for the Hivaranno who has
‘the hair of the bear’ and an independent and self reliant spirit - the very type of personality responsible for
laying the foundation for every human society in history.
From industry, he wonders, where is the respect for the sanctity of the natural environment from which all life comes - lock,
stock, and barrel.
And, from human-beings, he wonders, where is the respect for,
and understanding of, our own species’ true position as a functioning
biological
cog in the gears of nature as opposed to the flawed philosophy of the
self-anointed proverbial bug-tits who believe
human beings have evolved beyond the bounds of nature.

MOUNTAIN MAN GLOSSARY OF TERMS
BLACKBIRD STORM
An unexpected cold storm in late spring.
BUG-TIT
A derisive term used to mean any company official who tended to think that he was more important than he actually was.
CHEF DE VOYAGE
A party leader. (Voyageur)
CUT FOR SIGN, TO
To walk or ride back and forth across an area looking for evidence of a man or animal passing.
GONE BEAVER
Said of someone who has been dead some time. He's about to go under; but once dead, he's a gone beaver.
GREEN RIVER, UP TO
Anything of quality was said to be "up to Green River".
HAIR OF THE BEAR, HE HAS
The greatest praise a mountain man can say of another.
HIDE HUNTER
A rather low breed of man who killed buffalo for the hides only. Usually
despised by all who came into contact with him. "Buffalo skins for the
belts
of industry."
INDIAN ANNUITY
Payment given to Indians as part of a treaty agreement. More often than
not, a sizeable portion went into the pocket of some bureaucrat.
MEAT BAG, THE
The human stomach.
POOR BULL FROM FAT COW, TO KNOW
To know good times from bad. Either term could also be used alone, such
as: "Them days war Poor Bull and that be a sure fact", meaning, "those
days
food and plews were hard to get and that is a fact".
SQUARE
A term of respect. Any man of courage, honesty, self- reliance, and
devotion to what he believed to be right was " square " and darn proud
of-it.
SQUARE SHOOTER, A

THERE GO HORSE AND BEAVER
An expression meaning "I just lost everything I owned or had with me".
